What Is SkinnyStone™? Ultra-Thin Natural Stone Panels Explained

How SkinnyStone™ ultra-thin natural stone panels are made with 9X Fusion technology, what they weigh, and where they outperform traditional slabs.

SkinnyStone™ is real quarried stone — marble, onyx, quartzite, or travertine — cut to a fraction of the thickness of a traditional slab and permanently bonded to an engineered composite backer through our 9X Fusion process. The face you see and touch is 100% natural stone. What changes is everything behind it.

A conventional 3 cm slab weighs roughly 18–20 lb per square foot. SkinnyStone™ panels typically run 4–6 lb per square foot. That single number unlocks the applications designers ask for most: floor-to-ceiling fireplace walls over standard framing, elevator cabs, curved columns, yacht and aviation interiors, and full-height feature walls in towers with strict dead-load limits.

The 9X Fusion backer does more than reduce weight. It multiplies flexural strength, so panels survive shipping, handling, and installation impacts that would crack a raw thin slab. It also allows large formats — panels up to roughly 5 ft x 10 ft — which means fewer joints and cleaner, more monolithic architecture.

Because the stone face is thin, translucency becomes practical. Onyx and select marbles such as Zulio transmit light beautifully at SkinnyStone™ thickness, which is why so many of our signature projects are backlit.

Installation is mechanical rather than masonry: hidden clips or cleats plus structural adhesive over drywall, cement board, sheathing, or steel. No mortar bed, no mason crew, and no structural reinforcement in most residential applications.

For designers and contractors across the United States and Canada, the takeaway is simple: SkinnyStone™ lets you specify authentic natural stone in places where a slab was never an option.

Frequently asked

Is SkinnyStone™ real natural stone?
Yes. The visible face is genuine quarried marble, onyx, quartzite, or travertine. Only the backer is engineered.
How much does SkinnyStone™ weigh?
Typically 4–6 lb per square foot, versus roughly 18–20 lb per square foot for a traditional 3 cm slab.
How large can a SkinnyStone™ panel be?
Large-format panels are available up to approximately 5 ft x 10 ft, which greatly reduces the number of joints on a feature wall.
