Thin Stone Veneer
Authentic quarried stone, cut thin and reinforced — the finish of full slab marble without the weight, the footings or the masonry schedule.

What thin stone veneer actually is
Thin stone veneer is real stone — quarried marble, onyx, quartzite or travertine — cut from the block into a panel and bonded to a reinforcing backer. The face you see and touch is the same material as a full slab; what changes is everything behind it. Removing the structural mass means the stone can be adhered directly to a substrate instead of being supported by a footing, a ledge or a steel frame.
That distinction matters on interior work. A book-matched marble feature wall that would need structural review as slab stone becomes a straightforward finish trade as veneer. Our panels use 9X Fusion backing technology, a multi-layer composite that stabilises the stone against cracking and lets thin formats travel, bend and hang safely.
Thin veneer vs. full-bed masonry
| Consideration | Natural thin stone veneer | Full-bed / slab stone |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Light enough for standard interior substrates | Requires footing or structural support |
| Install | Adhered by a finish crew, days not weeks | Masonry crew, lifts and staging |
| Coverage | Large-format panels, few visible joints | Slab size limits and heavy seams |
| Curves & columns | Achievable with flexible formats | Rarely practical |
| Backlighting | Translucent panels glow with LED backing | Too thick to transmit light |
| Material | 100% quarried natural stone | 100% quarried natural stone |

Frequently asked questions
- What is thin stone veneer?
- Thin stone veneer is authentic natural stone cut into a lightweight panel — typically a few millimetres to under an inch thick — bonded to a reinforcing backer so it can be applied to walls, fireplaces, cabinetry and curved surfaces without the structural support full-bed masonry requires.
- Is thin stone veneer real stone?
- Our panels are quarried marble, onyx, quartzite and travertine — not printed porcelain or manufactured concrete. Each panel keeps the natural veining, crystalline depth and translucency of the block it was cut from.
- How thick are natural thin stone panels?
- Designer Stone Panels supplies panels from roughly 2 mm (SkinnyStone™ flexible sheets) up to standard veneer thicknesses, depending on the application. Thinner formats allow backlighting and curved installations.
- How much does thin stone veneer cost compared to full stone?
- Material cost per square foot is usually comparable, but total installed cost is often lower: panels are lighter, require no footing or wall reinforcement, cover more area per piece and install in a fraction of the labour hours of full-bed masonry.
- Can thin stone veneer be backlit?
- Yes. Translucent marble and onyx panels can be backlit with LED panels to reveal the stone's internal veining — one of the most requested luxury details for fireplaces, bars, wine cellars and vanity fronts.
- Where can thin stone veneer be installed?
- Interior feature walls, fireplace surrounds, kitchen backsplashes and hood surrounds, bathroom walls and vanities, wine cellars, furniture, elevator lobbies and reception desks — anywhere weight or install time makes slab stone impractical.
